Brian Burchik :: The Family of God :: 12.18.11

Christmas day is quickly approaching, and it is the time we celebrate the birthday of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The birth of Christ is not only give reason to stop and celebrate but also has incredible implications for how we perceive and live in the daily grind of everyday life. The fact that Jesus Christ lived as a human being speaks powerfully into how we view our families, our friends, our schools, our jobs, and the culture in which we live. It also empowers us to make a real difference in the real world, today. This Sunday, we will explore how Jesus’ life calls us to not only say, “yes” to a spiritual relationship with God, but also say “yes” to actively engaging in our families, jobs, and society.

Matt Reynolds :: Owner or Steward? :: 10.30.11

Do you consider yourself an owner or a steward of what God has graciously given you? As we’ve studied the last two Sundays, Jesus tells us the way we handle our money and possessions says a lot about what we actually believe about the Kingdom of God. In fact, 11 or Jesus’ 39 parables deal with finances and money directly, so as his disciples we must be wise in this area of our lives.

The key questions that come up in these parables are similar. Are we storing up for ourselves treasures on earth or investing in treasures that are eternal? Are we aware that we are accountable to God with how we use the things we have? Remember, this journey we are embarking on as a church leads us into more and more freedom!

Chris Moerman :: The Early Church Movement :: 09.04.11

“The Missio-Dei, is the mission of God, but more than that it is ‘the missional God’, mission comes from the heart of God, it’s part of His very nature and His plan, and nothing will stand against it! Last week we looked at the global state of God’s church, this week we’ll be exploring the movement of God’s church throughout history, how we are seeing Jesus’ prophecy that the ‘gates of Hell would not overcome it’ actually happening. We’ll also be looking at our role in that, and what God has entrusted too us.”

Matt Reynolds :: On This Rock I will Build My Church :: 08.21.11

Seriously, when Jesus thinks about the Church what comes to His mind? Buildings, organizational structures, a list of doctrines; a group or club everyone should join? What did Jesus mean when He tells Peter in Matthew 16:18 that he will build His church? How can we make sure we are building the same things Jesus wants built concerning the church? I know, these are huge questions that we need real, biblical answers for. That’s why we are starting a new series Sunday called, “Rediscovering the Church.”

Matt Reynolds :: The Constitution of The Kingdom :: 08.14.11

Sunday we’ll conclude our summer series on the Kingdom of God looking at Jesus’ famous sermon on the mount in Matthew 5-7. Was Jesus trying to give us a new law or reveal a completely different way to live? How can we know for sure what Jesus was trying to communicate in this sermon?

Ben Courson :: Great Things :: 06.19.11

Psalm 37:4 teaches that if we delight ourselves in God, He will give us the desires of our hearts. That’s a big promise. Seemingly too good to be true. But perhaps this promise isn’t too good to be true…perhaps it’s so good it’s got to be true! After all, if God sent His only Son to die for us, will He not also freely give us all things? Doesn’t God want to bless us? Because we have a God who is for us, who desires to match our dreams with His, what’s stopping us from dreaming big, stepping out in faith, and attempting great things for the Kingdom? It’s time to go big of go home…or I should say go big and go home, to Heaven. And we are going home soon. We don’t have any time to waste. We’re not getting any younger. So this is our time to expect great things from God, and attempt great things for God. If not now, when?

Chris Moerman :: Suffering and Sonship :: 05.22.11

Living in the tension of the ‘now but not yet’ reality of the Kingdom means that we have tasted and seen glimpses of what is to come, but we must still grapple with the fallenness of our humanity.

How do we balance the miracles and healings of Jesus, with the clear teaching He gives to us on suffering? Is there a greater purpose that God is inviting us into, that perhaps we cannot yet see? Perhaps our eternal inheritance in heaven and our suffering here on earth is more connected than we like to think?

Matt Reynolds :: Encounters with Jesus | A series in the Gospel of John | Covenant Restored :: 05.15.11

This Sunday will conclude our study in the book of John: “Encounters with Jesus.” The way John chooses to end his gospel should not surprise us, but rather affirm within our hearts what this “Apostle of Love” has been trying to communicate about Jesus throughout. Have we discovered what is in Jesus’ heart for His people? Read John 21 and see if you recognize the offer Jesus is making Peter in your own life with God. Do you know what it means to be in covenant with Jesus?

Matt Reynolds :: Encounters with Jesus | A series in the Gospel of John | John chap. 20 | Breathe :: 05.01.11

Post resurrection, Jesus began to appear to his disciples at various times “teaching them about the Kingdom of God over a period of 40 days” (Acts 1:3). In John 20:21-23 we encounter Jesus commissioning his disciples to be kingdom builders in a new way. He breathed on them and told them to “receive the Holy Spirit”. He was sending them into the world with the very same power and direction from the Holy Spirit that he had been given by the Father. Have we forgotten this gift altogether as the modern day church!? Have you encountered Jesus breathing His Holy Spirit onto your life?

Matt Reynolds :: Encounters with Jesus | John 14 | Palm Sunday :: 04.17.11

This Sunday, commemorates Jesus’ last entance into Jerusalem before his betrayal and death. What would Palm Sunday be like if Jesus entered our city? Some people would probably respond in joy, others in disdain, and still others in apathy. What about us? This week, we will look at Judas’ and Peter’s response to the King of the Jews. How can we learn from their choices.

Matt Reynolds :: Encounters with Jesus | John 13 | Redefining Power :: 04.10.11

Everybody likes to be in charge, even if it’s only every so often. But how do we act when we know we have all the power? What do you do when you know you are the most influential person in the room? This week as we study John 13 we are told in verse 3, “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power”. As the most powerful human ever, what Jesus chose to do next should shock us. What does it mean for us to use our power and influence in a similar fashion?

Chris Moerman :: John 10 :: 03.13.11

In John 10, Jesus tell us that as the shepherd he will lead us, his sheep, into true life, abundant life. What does this mean? In a world that is so full of earthly abundance and wealth, what does it mean that Jesus has come so that we might have ‘life, and have it more abundantly’? The core message of Jesus teaching was the coming of the Kingdom of God, and in this teaching he reveals to us fully the kind of life he has in store for us. As a church lets dive deep into discovering this abundant life, as it opens up for us, our families and our city.

Matt Reynolds :: Encounters with Jesus: Chapter 4 Pt.2 :: 02.06.11

Have you ever felt really desperate?

I mean, really desperate. So impoverished the only thing you could do was cry out to God for mercy? This Sunday, we will look at how Jesus encounters a man who is in this very place; his son is on his death bed. The way Jesus responds to this man is rather surprising, and some have even called it indifferent. What is Jesus trying to speak to us in this desperate encounter?

Matt Reynolds :: Encounters with Jesus : Chapter 2 :: 01.16.11

We discovered last week in the first chapter of John, that a disciple of Jesus, a ‘mathetes’ (meaning learner in the Greek New Testament), will primarily be one who is committed to learn to live like Jesus.

In John chapter 2, we see Jesus attending a wedding with his disciples. Everything seems normal until Jesus is asked to step in and solve a problem at the party; the wine has run out. What happens next should tell us something profound about the message Jesus is trying to communicate on earth. What is Jesus is telling us about his Kingdom through his first miracle? Who are the only people who actually realize a miracle has taken place?

Matt Reynolds :: Encounters with Jesus: A series in the Gospel of John :: 01.09.11

Sometimes when we read the Bible it can feel like an old history book that seems far removed from our modern lives. We start to see the Gospel stories as just that, simply stories. But when we take a longer look at the Gospel of John, we see real people interacting with a real Jesus. Regardless of what kind of life these people were living before they met Jesus, each person is radically changed once they encounter Jesus for themselves.

This week in John chapter 1 we will see the first people who encountered Jesus and decided to leave what they knew to become fishers of men.

Matt Reynolds :: The Names of God: Jesus :: 12.26.10

This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.

As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Brian Krawczyk :: Names of God:Emmanuel :: 12.19.10

Psalm 62:11-12 “One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are stong, and that you, O Lord, are love. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.”

It is one thing to know God as powerful Creator, infinite, all knowing, pre-existent One. How much greater the joy of knowing Him as intimate Husband, love of my soul, sacred Friend. When we know God as Lord, and relate to him as a servant relates to a good master, we may do good work out of obedience to Him. Work is the result of one ruling or directing another, fruit is only the result of a union between two. For this reason, God made himself known in the person of Jesus. He wants to be around us, he wants to be intimately involved with us — He wants to be as near to us as we’ll let Him get. And so, on that Christmas morning 2000 years ago Yahweh became Emmanuel, “God with us.”

Matt Reynolds :: The Search for Meaning: Am I Alone? :: 09.26.10

Have you ever felt totally alone on the planet? Distant, detached, isolated from anyone and everyone? Have you ever felt all alone because it seemed like God was totally distant?

In Ecclesiastes chapter 4, Solomon explores three different ways to view how other people being in our lives affects our lives. One man chose to live alone, while another man had a companion or two to journey with, and lastly two different kings sit on the throne with different opinions on the importance of those around them. The common thread that runs through all of these stories is ultimately our  commitment to community.

Buddy Hoffman :: Free to love? :: 07.04.10

freetoloveDoes Freedom matter? Is it Biblical? Freedom has been called a “dangerous idea”. What about liberty could be considered dangerous?

The words at the base of the Statue of Liberty read…

“Give me your tired, your poor,  Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.”

What is freedom? Why should we care? Is freedom a “spiritual yearning” placed there by God or a “sinful lust” to be independent?
Is it evil to yearn for liberty? Should we care for those without liberty? Is political freedom and spiritual freedom related? Is it a universal desire, or just representative of our culture?

Sunday we are headed into 1 Corinthians 8, and we will see what God has to say about this desire to be free, and the responsibilities that go with it.

Buddy Hoffman :: Jesus Fruit :: 04.25.10

jesusfruit1News so amazing that it caused you to question the credibility of the person telling you and wonder if such things were even in the realm of possibility. We are going to look at an episode from the prophet Elisha’s life in which he told one of the leaders what was going to happen and his response was, “That couldn’t happen even if the Lord opened the windows of heaven!” that man missed God’s miracle; it’s recorded in 2 Kings 7. We have been talking about fruitfulness. Perhaps you have bought the lie of Satan that it is God’s will that you live in the desert, fruitless and dry. You might have even embraced such thinking to the point you take pride in your dehydrated existence. I have really good news. God is going to do something big, massive, immense and intense…it’s harvest time!
