After watching Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead, the crowd following him grew large and continued to increase as the word spread of this miracle. In the midst of this excitement and momentum, Jesus speaks to the people in a parable about what is to come, “the death of a kernel of wheat” resulting in “a plentiful harvest of new lives.” It was the beginning of the end of Jesus’ ministry on the earth, and with it a challenge given to anyone considering to following Him. This Sunday we will freshly examine Jesus’ call to discipleship and how it translates today in 2011.

Have you ever felt totally alone on the planet? Distant, detached, isolated from anyone and everyone? Have you ever felt all alone because it seemed like God was totally distant?

In Ecclesiastes chapter 4, Solomon explores three different ways to view how other people being in our lives affects our lives. One man chose to live alone, while another man had a companion or two to journey with, and lastly two different kings sit on the throne with different opinions on the importance of those around them. The common thread that runs through all of these stories is ultimately our  commitment to community.
