Matt Reynolds :: Encounters with Jesus : Chapter 2 :: 01.16.11

We discovered last week in the first chapter of John, that a disciple of Jesus, a ‘mathetes’ (meaning learner in the Greek New Testament), will primarily be one who is committed to learn to live like Jesus.

In John chapter 2, we see Jesus attending a wedding with his disciples. Everything seems normal until Jesus is asked to step in and solve a problem at the party; the wine has run out. What happens next should tell us something profound about the message Jesus is trying to communicate on earth. What is Jesus is telling us about his Kingdom through his first miracle? Who are the only people who actually realize a miracle has taken place?

Jim Brown :: Making Disciples :: 01.02.11

Jesus made discipleship part of our lives when he told his disciples wherever they go they were to disciple. The concept of discipleship has actually been around a long time…

When the Greek warrior Odysseus went off to fight in the Trojan war, he left his young son, Telemachus, in the care of a trusted guardian, Mentor. The 10 year siege of Troy, coupled with the 10 years it took to journey home resulted in Odysseus long absence. Arriving home, he found that his son had grown into an extraordinary man – thanks to Mentor’s wise tutelage. Based on this story, we now speak of a mentor as someone who affects and influences the development of another, usually a younger person. This Sunday, we plan to explore this idea more and how God intends it to mark each one of us.

To finish our series through Joshua we look at the last two chapters of the book and see Israel passing on the knowledge and the inheritance of God to the future generations. Joshua did two things: He reminded Israel of God’s goodness and he commissioned the nation to respond to His Goodness.
